The top hat is used instead of a blank cover with several important advantages. It allows installers to leave wires that enter the junction boxes extending straight. With the depth of the top hat there is no need to coil wires and stuff them into the smaller parts of the junction box. This will save time during installation and more importantly during troubleshooting. Additionally, this high volume cover makes it easier to access the contents of any junction box.
